Chapter 22: Blackwell Reads His Own Connection — The Variable He Excluded

The document was eight centimeters by eleven. Blackwell had measured it against his palm three times since slipping it into his jacket pocket in the corridor outside Falk's compartment, not because the measurement was relevant but because his hands needed something precise to do while his mind decided whether to look at it directly.

He looked at it directly.

His compartment was the third from the front of car two — a deliberate selection at Geneva, as all his selections were deliberate, chosen for the specific acoustic properties of its position relative to the coupling joint, which transmitted vibration in a pattern that he found, against all rational expectation, conducive to concentrated thought. The train was not moving now. The coupling joint was silent. He sat on the narrow berth with the overhead lamp at three-quarter brightness and placed the document on the fold-down writing surface and studied it the way he studied everything: without sentiment, without flinching, with the particular quality of attention that his former colleagues at GCHQ had described, variously, as uncanny, as aggressive, and once, memorably, as inhuman, which he had taken as a compliment and which they had not intended as one.
