Chapter 24: Hana Descends

The ventilation grille was still humming when Hana pressed her palm flat against the concrete beside it, feeling the vibration move up through her wrist bones.

Sachi had drawn the gate's location three times on three different pieces of paper, each from a slightly different angle, the way you triangulate something you cannot see directly. The papers were in Hana's jacket pocket. She had memorized them on the bus, then read them again standing here, then folded them with the care she usually reserved for grocery receipts that needed to last the week. Precision. She had always been good at precision.

What she had was this: the maintenance passage, the fifteen-rung ladder, the point seven meters below the annex floor where the signal stopped being sound and became something else. Sachi had described it the way you describe a door. Not the door itself — the feeling of a door. The way the air changes before you push through.
