She had intercepted the whisper from a trusted ear in Langley, but hearing it raw like this twisted the knife. Her pearl necklace felt heavy against her throat, a reminder of old stains.

Victor hung up and turned, his smug smile faltering for a split second when he saw her. "Darling," he said, smooth as oil, "you look like you've heard a ghost."

She set the tumbler down with deliberate care, the glass ringing against the oak desk. "General Khorsandi's name on your lips. An arms run through Iraq, narcotics to fund it, all without my say. You think I vetoed that for sport, Victor? Our fronts in the Gulf hang by threads you just cut."
