Chapter 10: The Scar in the Mirror

The flat was cold when he got back, which meant he had left a window open, which meant he had been somewhere in his head this morning before the safe house rather than managing ordinary things. He closed the window. He stood in the kitchen for a moment with his wet jacket still on and the rain tapping at the glass, and then he took the jacket off and hung it on the back of the chair and put the kettle on, and none of that was particularly interesting but it gave his hands something to do.

Ptolemy was on the kitchen counter in defiance of several long-standing agreements. He looked at Evander with the equanimity of someone who had decided that the current circumstances constituted an exception.

Evander did not argue.
