The sleep protocol, it turned out, was a cot in a secondary room off the laboratory — four metres by three, a fold-down shelf that functioned as a desk, and a ventilation unit that ran at a frequency just below the threshold of human hearing.

Viktor could hear it perfectly.

He had noted this at 11:43 PM when they had locked the laboratory for the night and he had catalogued the room's properties with the same methodical attention he applied to everything else: the ventilation frequency (approximately 17 Hz, low infrasound, probably unintentional), the mattress density (medium-firm, standard institutional procurement), the temperature (19 degrees Celsius, which was reasonable), and the darkness, which was total and therefore not a problem.
