Chapter 24: Dario's Warning

Dario called on a Wednesday, which was not their day.

Marcus was at the kitchen table with a set of lab reports when the phone buzzed. He looked at the screen. The contact was listed as Landscape Consult, which was how it had been listed since the third week, and which still produced, each time he saw it, a small internal acknowledgment that he had become someone who assigns cover identities to his phone contacts.

He let it ring twice, because answering immediately was its own kind of tell, and then he picked up.
