Marcus said he had time Thursday evening if she was available. Reyes said she knew a place in the South Valley, gave him the cross streets, and told him seven o'clock. She did not ask what he wanted to discuss. He did not tell her. The line went quiet in the way that lines go quiet when both parties have decided the conversation is complete, and Marcus set his phone on the kitchen counter next to the ring and stood there for a moment looking at neither.
