Samwell came down the ladder forty minutes later with a portable lamp clipped to his vest and grease already on his knuckles from a task he'd left half-finished above. He looked at the bracket, looked at Farro's hands holding it, and didn't ask what Gander had wanted. That was the particular discipline of eight years — knowing which questions would be answered without asking and which wouldn't be answered at all.

"Hold right," Samwell said. He positioned himself on the other side of the conduit junction, his lamp throwing the cable run in hard relief. "You've got it two millimeters high on the starboard side."

"I know."
