Chapter 22: The Keeper and the Flame

The corridor smelled of ozone and something older underneath it — the way old buildings smell when you get beneath the renovation, beneath the new plaster, to the stone that remembers being quarried. Mara walked it with her hand in her pocket, fingers around the lamp, and did not slow down.

The server farm's interior was not what the exterior of the building had prepared her for. The corridor stretched longer than the warehouse's footprint allowed, the same impossible spatial generosity she had encountered in the CURRENT building's rooftop, in the temple's nave, in Nox's bus where the back seats went further than the back seats should. She had stopped cataloguing these violations as violations. She filed them now under: how things are.

The servers ran in rows on either side, their lights blinking in patterns that were almost but not quite random. The warmth was steady and considerable. And underneath the hum of the machines there was something else — a frequency rather than a sound, felt in the chest the way the creature beneath Aldgate had communicated, though this was lighter, faster, more insistent. The difference between geological patience and electricity. Between a river and a current.
