Chapter 11: Lord Aldric's Library and an Unsupervised Conversation

The library was on the Court's third floor, at the end of a corridor so deliberately unlit that Honoria had initially mistaken it for a service passage. She had corrected this error — as she had corrected most of her initial errors about the Gilded Court — through the simple mechanism of paying closer attention than was strictly expected. The library's existence was noted in the tributes' orientation documents in a single subordinate clause, the way one mentions a private arrangement: *access to the Court's reference collection is available to tributes during daylight hours by written application to the chamberlain's office*. The clause's placement, between the laundry schedule and the section on appropriate footwear for stone corridors, had the quality of information someone had been legally obligated to include and had attempted to make as easy as possible to overlook.

Honoria had submitted her written application on the second day, receiving in return a small brass key that the chamberlain's assistant had handed over with the precise expression of someone who had not anticipated the form being submitted but found no procedural grounds to refuse it. She had not used the key until now, because she had been learning other things first, and because she had wanted to arrive in the library knowing what she was looking for.

She knew now. She needed the Court's published precedent record for the past fifteen Ascensions — specifically the formal tribunal decisions, if any existed, on the question of social infraction versus deliberate manipulation. She needed to understand, with textual evidence rather than hypothesis, whether what had happened to Dassler in the garden was sanctioned, organised, or simply permitted. There was a distinction between these three possibilities, and the distinction mattered.
