In the sleepy coastal town of Shiokaze, Japan, 1987, five teenagers bound by childhood habit rather than genuine closeness are yanked into something ancient and suffocating when Mori Junpei falls through a rotted section of the shrine's floor and returns three days later — wrong. He smells of brine and something older. His shadow moves half a second behind him. And he whispers, in sleep, coordinates to a place that doesn't appear on any map. Beneath the shrine lies a threshold, a membrane between the ordinary world and a dimension the locals have called Urazoko — the Undersurface — for generations, in hushed tones no one fully explains. The group begins to unravel a thread that leads back to a woman named Haruka Sendo, committed to a care facility in Osaka since 1971, who has spent sixteen years pressing her palms flat against the wall and whispering the same phrase: 'She is still inside.' Haruka was once a student activist and folklore researcher who volunteered for a clandestine government program operating out of a converted fishery on the peninsula — a program that used ritual isolation, psychotropic compounds derived from deep-sea organisms, and ancient shrine acoustics to attempt contact with Urazoko. The program took her daughter, a girl born during a botched experimental session, a child with the ability to open the membrane with nothing more than concentrated grief. As the teens dig deeper, the J-horror dread thickens — wrong angles in photographs, wet footprints leading nowhere, the shrine bells ringing at low tide with no wind. But underneath the terror pulses something achingly human: a mother's love weaponized by the state, a daughter lost between worlds, and five ordinary kids who must choose between the warmth of the surface and the truth rotting beneath it.
