APEX Network, the world's dominant streaming megacorporation, runs 'The Meridian'—a twelve-week survival competition broadcast live across every screen, neural implant, and augmented-reality feed on the planet. Unlike the forced conscriptions of old dystopias, contestants sign up willingly, seduced by the promise of the Apex Crown: lifelong wealth, algorithmic immortality, and a verified follower count in the billions. The show selects twenty-four contestants from twelve economic 'Zones'—color-coded socioeconomic tiers that determine a citizen's access to education, healthcare, and bandwidth. The poorest Zones produce the hungriest competitors. Seventeen-year-old Kael Voss from Zone 12-Gray has never owned a verified account. When his impulsive younger sister Mira livestreams herself volunteering for The Meridian to buy their mother's cancer treatment, Kael shoves her aside on camera and takes her slot instead—accidentally becoming a viral moment before the competition even begins.
