Synopsis

When Elizabeth Bennet opens her eyes, she finds herself not in the familiar drawing rooms of Hertfordshire but in the shadow-draped halls of King's Landing, clad in the modest grey wool of House Wren — a minor northern family so inconsequential that no one has yet bothered to have them killed. She carries no memories of how she arrived, only the full force of her wit, her pride, and her deeply inconvenient habit of saying exactly what she thinks to exactly the wrong people. The year is the final summer before the long war. Lord Eddard Stark has just been named Hand of the King, and the court is a serpents' nest of smiling faces and hidden daggers. Elizabeth — now called Lady Elspeth of Wren — is installed as a minor lady-in-waiting to Queen Cersei, a position that is simultaneously an honor and a death sentence. She quickly learns that the weapons she has always wielded — irony, observation, social intelligence — are far more dangerous here than she ever imagined, because the powerful do not forgive being made to feel foolish. She draws the attention of Tyrion Lannister, who finds her the only honest tongue in a court of flatterers, and the cold, calculating interest of Lord Petyr Baelish, who recognizes in her a mind worth either recruiting or destroying. When she stumbles upon the same secret that doomed Ned Stark — the truth of Joffrey's parentage — Elizabeth must decide whether her principles are worth dying for. But unlike Ned, she does not announce her discovery with noble gravity. She plays the game. The novel charts her transformation from a woman who survived drawing-room warfare into one who navigates genuine political terror without ever surrendering the conscience that makes her who she is. Love, betrayal, survival, and the question of whether a good person can endure a world that punishes goodness at every turn.
