Synopsis

In the ancient world of Ellareth, a young and unremarkable scholar named Tomas Wren finds himself unexpectedly drawn into a desperate quest when the Sage Council tasks a fellowship of seven with escorting the Shard of Undoing — a relic of terrible power — across a continent on the brink of war, to be destroyed in the volcanic Forge of First Fire deep within the enemy realm of Ashenveld. The fellowship includes the weathered ranger Cassian, the elven diplomat Seraphine, the dwarf warrior Breck, the ambitious lord's son Aldric, the elderly priest Morvaine, and the fearless swordswoman Dara. Tomas, chosen only as the Shard's designated keeper due to a peculiarity in his blood, has no obvious heroic qualities — save for an extraordinary capacity to observe and remember everything around him. When the fellowship's secret route is repeatedly betrayed to Ashenveld's shadow-riders, and then the priest Morvaine is found murdered at a riverside camp with a wound no enemy could have inflicted, it becomes clear that one among their company is feeding information to the darkness. Each member has secrets. Each has reason, history, and motive. One by one, Tomas quietly catalogues inconsistencies — a missing hour, a smudged letter, boots dried too quickly by a fire nobody claimed to have lit — weaving clues planted discreetly in every chapter. As the fellowship fractures and the Shard grows heavier with proximity to Ashenveld, Tomas must solve the murder and name the traitor before the Forge is reached and the quest destroyed from within. The final revelation reframes every preceding chapter, exposing not one traitor but a conspiracy born from grief, loyalty misplaced, and a definition of justice that haunts the living long after the wicked are punished.
