Chapter 12: The Year Callum Finch Disappeared

The sub-basement smelled of cold stone and something older underneath it, and Elliot had been smelling it for three days now without deciding what the second thing was. Not rot. Not damp. Something more mineral than that, more patient — the smell of a place that had been sealed and then unsealed and was not yet sure what it thought about the air coming back in.

Sable found the letter on a Tuesday.

She found it the way she found everything: systematically, without announcement, using a method she had developed through a process she never fully explained to either of them and which Elliot suspected was partly borrowed from her sister. The method, as far as he had reconstructed it, went like this: you identified what you needed to know, then you identified who was most likely to know it and had the least institutional reason to protect it, and then you wrote to that person with exactly enough information to make them feel trusted and not enough to make them feel implicated. Sable wrote good letters. She wrote them in a hand that looked older than she was, and she never wrote them from the school's correspondence desk in the main hall where the post was collated and periodically reviewed by administrative staff.
