Chapter 25: The Grasp Used as a Scalpel

The east reading room smelled of old binding glue and the particular cold that settled into stone rooms left unheated overnight. Elliot arrived first, which was deliberate, because arriving first meant he could watch the door and the window and the specific gap between the nearest bookshelf and the wall where, six weeks ago, Drift had shown him the blind spot in the portrait's sightline. The portrait in question hung at the room's far end — a woman in a high collar, circa 1920, oils gone dark with varnish — and she did not look at the gap. She had never looked at the gap. Drift thought this was the building's equivalent of institutional oversight, a place the architecture had neglected to supervise. Elliot thought it was more likely a test.

He sat in the gap anyway. You worked with what you had.

Sable came in four minutes later, her bag over one shoulder and her hair still damp from the shower, which meant she had been up before the water ran warm, which meant she had not slept, or had slept the way she slept when her mind was doing something she hadn't sanctioned. She pulled the chair across from him without asking and sat down and put both hands flat on the table, which was how she occupied space when she was containing something.
