The letter arrived on a Tuesday, which was already suspicious, as nothing of consequence had ever arrived in Millhaven on a Tuesday.

It came with the morning post, tucked between a seed merchant's circular and a notice from the Alderman regarding the improper storage of root vegetables in public thoroughfares — a notice which was, I confess, not entirely unrelated to my own current professional activities. The envelope was of a quality wholly disproportionate to its surroundings: heavy cream paper, the colour of old ivory, sealed with wax of a deep arterial red. The impression in the wax was a circle of seven linked rings, each one slightly open, as though in the process of being added to a chain. I had seen that seal only in one book, and that book was the kind one found in the reference section of a library, behind the desk where the more excitable sort of patron could not easily reach it.

I set down my surveying rod and read the letter standing in Fenwick's east meadow, with my boots sinking incrementally into the sort of mud that commits to an opinion.

The letter was brief. It introduced itself as being on behalf of Aldrath, whose surname appeared to be either unnecessary or too dangerous to commit to paper. It stated that my particular skills were required in service of a matter of some urgency to the realm. It offered, in a parenthetical that I found simultaneously reassuring and ominous, that my expenses would be covered. It requested my presence at the Crossroads Inn at Veldmere within the week.

It did not explain which particular skills a halfling cartographer from a village whose most recent crisis involved three acres of contested turnip field might contribute to a matter of urgency to the realm. I found this omission somewhat characteristic of important letters, which in my experience tend to convey the impression of having explained things while having done nothing of the sort.

I looked across Fenwick's east meadow to where Old Hollowell's surveying stakes had been driven into the ground at what I could demonstrate, with instruments, was an angle of approximately four degrees of brazen optimism.

I retrieved my rod, made three final measurements for the sake of professional completeness, and went home to pack.

Millhaven did not detain me. It is a village which has mastered the particular art of existing contentedly and without ambition, and my departure, while noted with the mild interest that attaches to any local event that does not involve livestock, produced no great ceremony. My landlady, Mrs. Cobbe, pressed upon me a wedge of cheese and the observation that I would probably need a warmer coat. My colleague Westerbrook, who handled the more contentious agricultural disputes while I produced the maps that were meant to resolve them and frequently did not, shook my hand and asked that I return before the Fenwick-Hollowell matter reached tribunal, as he found the relevant geography confusing. I said I would do my best.

I am four feet and three inches tall, which is precisely average for a halfling and precisely below the threshold at which most humans begin to take careful note of their surroundings. I have brown hair of no particular distinction, spectacles I have needed since the age of eleven, and hands that are better suited to the small, careful work of draughting than to anything requiring force or menace. I mention these facts not from false modesty but because they are relevant to an accurate understanding of what followed. A man who has spent his professional life making himself useful in rooms where he is not expected to understand the conversation develops certain habits of observation that more conspicuous people rarely find necessary.

The road to Veldmere took three days. I spent them mapping the terrain as I passed through it, which is a habit so ingrained as to be essentially involuntary — a continuous annotation of the world at the margins of one's attention. The Greywood's eastern shoulder was visible from the ridge above Hartmere, blue-grey and distant, and I sketched it with the particular interest of a man who had never had professional occasion to chart it and had always been curious about its reported qualities. I did not know, at the time, that this would prove to have been a useful preliminary.

Veldmere was a proper town, which is to say it had an inn with more than one room and a market square that appeared to function for purposes beyond the sale of cheese. The Crossroads Inn occupied the town's southern corner with the settled, permanent air of a building that had seen several generations of travellers and formed no strong opinion of any of them. A battered sign above the door depicted a crow on a crossroads marker, painted with more enthusiasm than precision.

I arrived on the evening of the fifth day, which was, the letter had specified, the last acceptable evening for arrival. The common room was warm and smelled of pine smoke and mutton stew, and it was, by the time I shouldered through the low door with my pack and my map case, already occupied.

I took a seat at the bar, ordered whatever was available, and applied myself to the cartographer's habit: measure the room before you speak to it.

There were six of them, arranged around the common room with the studied casualness of people who had not yet decided how they felt about each other's existence. I catalogued them in the order in which they presented themselves to careful attention, which is to say not the order in which they wished to be noticed.

The dwarf-woman occupied the fireside bench with the proprietary certainty of someone who has assessed a room's defensible positions and selected the best one, and would like everyone to be aware of this without having to say so directly. She was broad-shouldered even for a dwarf, with close-cropped dark hair and an axe propped against the bench beside her with the comfortable familiarity of a much-consulted colleague. She was eating with one hand and holding a horn of ale with the other and watching the room with the flat, evaluative gaze of a woman who has made a professional study of things that need killing. I estimated, from the callusing on her hands and the precise angle at which she had positioned the axe, that she had been doing this for some time and found it largely satisfactory. She did not look at me when I entered, then looked at me once with great economy, then returned to her ale. I had the impression I had been catalogued and filed under a heading that translated roughly as 'probably harmless.'

The knight was easy to identify because he was the one person in the room who wore his occupation openly: Sir Aldous Vane, if the briefing letter's roster was accurate, and the briefing letter had an air of accuracy about it that I had found trustworthy. He was tall, perhaps fifty, with a soldier's posture that had softened into something more considered with the years — the bearing of a man who had learned that the performance of authority is a separate skill from its exercise. Silver at his temples, a jaw that had formed opinions about adversity and kept them. He was in conversation with the mage, and his manner with her was the slightly elevated patience of a man accustomed to briefings that assume his interest without establishing his comprehension.

The mage was a tall, narrow woman of indeterminate middle age, draped in the particular combination of ink stains and absentmindedness that characterises the committed academic. She had three books open on the table before her, one of which appeared to be serving as both reference material and a surface for her dinner plate. Her hands moved when she spoke — illustrating something, it seemed, with a precision her audience was tracking with courteous but incomplete success. She was the type of person, I noted, who would tell you a great many things, most of them accurate, and who would be so occupied in doing so that she would not notice what you were not telling her. I considered this quality both charming and potentially problematic, for reasons I could not yet have articulated.

The ranger was in the corner. Not one of the corners near the fire; the corner behind the door, with his chair angled so that both the room's entrance and its single window remained within his peripheral vision at minimal effort. He was weathered in the way that wild country weathers a man — not aged exactly, but made extremely specific by exposure, like a stone in a fast river. Scars on his left forearm, partially visible below a rolled sleeve; a stillness that was not inertia but control. He was the sort of man who, in a room full of people, appeared to be alone in a comfortable camp of his own construction. He watched me enter, assessed me for approximately two seconds, and returned to his drink with the manner of a man who has answered his question and filed it away.

The elf sat at the bar — at the far end of it, which is to say approximately eight feet to my left. She was very old, in the way that elves are old: it did not manifest as age but as a sort of accumulated quality, a density of attention, as though she had been watching things long enough to understand the difference between what was happening and what was occurring beneath it. Her hair was the silver-white of birch bark, worn simply; her posture was economical; her expression was the particular blankness of a person managing, with considerable practice, not to allow interest to show before they had decided it was warranted. She looked at me when I sat down and then away again, smoothly, but I had the strong impression that she had seen rather more than I might have wished before she did so.

And then there was the swordsman.

He was at a table toward the room's centre — not the best defensive position, which was the ranger's corner; not the warmest seat, which was the dwarf's; not the most convenient for conversation, which was where the knight and the mage had established themselves. He was at a table that allowed him, I observed, to place his back against the wall while appearing to sit in the open. It was a very slightly recessed section of the common room, half panelled, and he had arranged himself within it with the instinctive precision of a man who does this without noticing he does it. He was dark-haired, broad through the shoulders, handsome in the theatrical way of men who have learned to use the fact, and his expression was the controlled, slightly shadowed variety that I had always found interesting — not because it suggested hidden depths, which is the common interpretation, but because it is extremely difficult to maintain with consistency, which suggests it is being maintained rather than simply worn.

He looked at me once, with the pleasant emptiness that is the swordsman's equivalent of the ranger's two-second assessment, and I understood clearly that I did not register as a concern.

I noted all of this in the small leather journal I keep tucked inside my map case, under the heading 'INITIAL OBSERVATIONS — CROSSROADS INN, VELDMERE.' The entry regarding the swordsman was brief: he keeps his back to every wall he sits near, including walls he has technically moved away from. I underlined the observation, not because I was certain it was significant, but because I have learned over many years of cartographic work that the features you underline without knowing why are often the ones you return to later with a measure of gratitude.

Aldrath arrived at the seventh hour, which I mention only because the room's atmosphere changed when he entered — not dramatically, not with any observable cause, but with the subtle adjustment of a barometer, as though the pressure of the room had shifted to accommodate someone whose presence occupied more space than his physical form required. He was an old man, slight, with white hair worn long and a face mapped by time into something that had stopped being young so far back as to have made peace with the fact and moved on. His eyes were the particular grey of sky above the Ashpeaks in early winter, which I had not yet visited but would later recognise in retrospect as a prescient association.

He sat at the head of the joined tables, set down a case of dark-lacquered wood, and looked at each of us in turn with the unhurried assessment of a man who has all the time he needs, which is considerably less than he would like, and knows it.

'You are all here,' he said, with the mild surprise of a man who had not entirely expected it. 'Good.'

He briefed us on the Shard of Unmaking with the economy of someone who has explained something important many times and has learned which details the audience most requires. The Shard was an object of considerable age and considerable malevolence, currently contained within the lacquered case, which was itself lined with lead, which muffled but — as I could observe, if I paid careful attention — did not entirely extinguish a faint, discordant resonance in the air, like a chord played slightly wrong and held. It had been stolen thirty years prior from the Conclave of Threads and had passed through several catastrophic custodial arrangements since, and it was now in Aldrath's possession because he was the only person its current situation had not yet killed.

The Ashpeaks. A volcanic range, largely unmapped in its interior. A crater at the summit where the geological and magical conditions combined to allow for the permanent destruction of objects of this nature. A journey of three weeks, perhaps four, through territory of progressive hostility, and the certainty that the Shadow King's forces were aware of the Shard's existence and would prefer its destruction not to occur on a schedule favourable to the realm.

He looked around the table.

'Objections?' he said.

There were none, which I found either inspiring or ominous and did not yet know which.

'The route,' Aldrath continued, 'requires mapping. Much of the interior pass has not been charted. Mr. Merrow' — he found me with his eyes with no apparent difficulty, which was more than most people managed — 'I am told you are the most accurate cartographer currently practicing east of the Greywood. I require that accuracy rather urgently.'

'The most accurate east of the Greywood is perhaps a modest standard,' I said, 'but I am grateful for the commission, and I will do my best.'

The dwarf-woman, across the table, looked at me with the expression of someone reassessing a filed document and finding it, on reflection, worth a second reading. The ranger — Caelen, if the roster held — looked into his cup. The swordsman did not look at me at all, which was, I noted, also a kind of information.

After Aldrath concluded and the company dispersed to their various contemplations of the evening, I sat at the bar with my journal and the cheese Mrs. Cobbe had pressed on me and reviewed what I had recorded.

It was, taken in aggregate, a remarkable collection of people: an honest and capable knight; a scholar whose enthusiasm clearly outran her situational awareness; a ranger whose competence was visible at twenty feet; a dwarf-woman who had the air of someone who had not yet lost a fight she had wished to win; an elf of evident age and uncertain depths; and a wizard whose authority was as plain as his declining health if you knew where to look, which most of them apparently did not.

And the swordsman, who had neither confirmed nor denied any particular fact about himself and who had, throughout the entire briefing, occupied his slightly recessed wall with the settled composure of a man who already knew how the evening was going to proceed.

I finished the cheese. I added one more line to my journal, below the notation about the walls.

Then I closed the book, tucked it back into my map case alongside Aldrath's route notes, and resolved to be useful.

Quietly, systematically, entirely without fanfare — and paying, as was my professional habit, very close attention to the things that other people had decided were not worth the trouble of noticing.
