Synopsis

In the war-torn land of Eryndell, a Fellowship of seven unlikely companions is assembled by the ancient wizard Aldrath to carry the Shard of Unmaking — a cursed gemstone that whispers madness to its bearer — deep into the volcanic heart of the Ashpeaks, where it must be unmade before the Shadow King reclaims it. The company includes Tobias Merrow, a quiet and bookish halfling cartographer from the peaceful village of Millhaven, whose greatest adventure before this was mapping a disputed turnip field; the grizzled ranger Caelen; the fierce dwarf-woman Bryndis; the elven archer Siovhan; the scholarly mage Perenthia; the noble knight Sir Aldous Vane; and the brooding swordsman Rook, whose past no one dares question. Three days into their journey, Sir Aldous Vane is found dead at dawn in his bedroll — twelve precise wounds across his chest, his expression not of terror but of recognition. Someone he trusted stood above him in the dark. Tobias, overlooked and underestimated by all, begins quietly observing: a bootprint in peculiar mud, a missing vial of sleeping herb, a lie told at the wrong campfire. As the Fellowship presses deeper into increasingly dangerous country — besieged by Shadow-wraiths, lost in the Mirewood, and forced into desperate battle at the Bridge of Embers — more deaths follow, each one framed as an accident, each one scrutinised only by Tobias.
