Synopsis

Twelve-year-old Callum Voss has spent his whole life being ordinary — ordinary enough to be overlooked, ordinary enough to survive. Raised by his cold uncle and brittle aunt in a rotting house on the edge of a dying mill town, Callum has learned that invisibility is its own kind of armor. Then the letter arrives, stamped in ink that smells faintly of copper and something older, and a gaunt woman named Marsh appears at the door with mud on her boots and too many teeth in her smile. She tells Callum he has been accepted to Dunhollow Academy, a boarding school for the Sensitives — children who can hear the world thinking. He is not special, she says carefully. He is simply eligible. Dunhollow is a castle that predates its own maps, perched on a basalt cliff above a lake that has never been successfully measured for depth. The other students arrive with their own nervous energy: Priya, razor-smart and cataloguing every anomaly in a leather notebook; and Søren, who hasn't spoken since last winter and communicates in gestures that somehow say everything. Classes are strange but manageable — Resonance Theory, Applied Silence, the History of Thresholds. Then, six weeks into the term, a boy named Fletcher simply ceases to exist. Not dead. Not missing. Ceased. His bed is smooth. His name has been removed from the dormitory register. The faculty speak around the absence the way a tongue moves around a missing tooth. Callum begins to notice things: the way certain hallways lengthen at night, the sound beneath the sound of the dining hall, the way Headmaster Vael's shadow occasionally moves a half-second before he does. Dunhollow is not a school with dark secrets. It is something ancient that learned to wear a school's shape, and it is still learning to be satisfied with what the students leave behind — their fears, their lost memories, their small surrendered pieces of self. Callum is not the Chosen One. He is simply the first to understand what chosen actually means here, and what is doing the choosing.
