Chapter 7: Brennan Osse's Handwriting

The message in volume sixty-two was three lines long.

Elias found it on Tuesday, at half past five in the morning, in the interval between the mirror's third and fourth relay of the night. He had been checking the shelf every other day for a week with the mechanical regularity of someone who did not expect to find anything and needed it to appear that way. The paper was folded into a quarter-sheet and tucked flat against the spine, invisible without the correct Lumos variant — a narrow-band pulse, wavelength adjusted by a quarter-tone sharp, the kind of modification any competent student could produce and almost none would think to. He had practised it four times in his room with the lamp covered before he had the angle right.

He read it standing with his back to the mirror, the open book held at chest height as though he were checking a reference. Three lines. The first was a time. The second was a location given not by name but by three spatial coordinates expressed as distances from fixed architectural points — an archivist's notation, which was either considerate or calculated. The third line said: bring nothing that cannot be explained by your presence at the given location. Bring the Lumos variant you used to read this.
