Synopsis

In the sprawling, gaslit corridors of the Arcanum — the magical government that rules Britannia's hidden world — blood status is everything. Muggle-borns are classified as 'Diluted,' tattooed with invisible runic marks readable only by Ministry Trace-Wands, denied wand licenses above Level Two, and tracked through the Purity Ledger: a living document that rewrites itself nightly to reflect whatever history the Bureau of Magical Truth finds convenient. Seventeen-year-old Elias Vorne has spent his life pretending. Son of a Muggle schoolteacher, admitted to Greymoor Academy on a provisional scholarship, he has learned to speak like a Half-blood, to suppress the particular brightness of his spellwork, to never draw attention. He works in the Academy's own Record Room, correcting examination histories and erasing inconvenient results — a junior archivist for the lie. Then a girl named Sera Ashwick falls in the corridor outside the Restricted Annex, and the folded scrap of paper that tumbles from her sleeve lands at his feet. It contains a single sentence he was never meant to read. What follows pulls Elias into the Remnant, an underground network of Diluteds, sympathetic Half-bloods, and two disillusioned Ministry clerks who believe the Purity Ledger can be destroyed from inside. But the Ministry's Thought-Watchers — enchanted mirrors installed in every dormitory, every lavatory, every broom cupboard — are always listening. And the man Elias most trusts, the one who recruited him, may have been a Ministry plant from the beginning. As the Registry closes around him, Elias must choose between survival through compliance and the terrifying, possibly futile act of remembering the truth.
