Synopsis

When seventeen-year-old Maren Voss moves to the perpetually fog-drenched coastal town of Ashveil to live with her reclusive uncle, she expects loneliness. What she does not expect is Cael — pale as birch bark, older than the lighthouse, and possessed of eyes that shift color like something living beneath ice. He attends the local school because he finds it amusing, the way one might find a music box amusing: charming for a time, then forgotten on a shelf for decades. Maren is drawn to him with the particular helplessness of someone who knows they are walking toward a cliff edge and cannot stop their feet. Cael is not romantic in the way of storybooks. He does not sparkle. He is a thing assembled from hunger and centuries of careful stillness, who has decided, with the same deliberate patience he applies to everything, that Maren is interesting. Perhaps dangerously so. As their strange courtship unfolds — walks through salt-bitten forests, conversations that unspool like riddles, moments of tenderness that feel borrowed from some other, kinder world — Ashveil itself begins to behave oddly. A second vampire arrives, ancient and wild and nothing like Cael's cultivated restraint, hunting something buried beneath the town's foundations. Old debts surface. Maren learns that Cael's interest in her is not entirely coincidental, that her bloodline carries a secret older than Ashveil's oldest stones. She must choose whether love for something fundamentally alien is love at all — and whether she is willing to become something stranger than human to keep it.
