The Dreaming Beneath the Shire

Synopsis

In the rolling green hills of the Shire, Frodo Underhill has always been different — not merely in his reading habits or his wandering eyes, but in the quality of his dreams. Since inheriting a plain golden ring from his uncle Bilbo, who vanished muttering things that no sane hobbit should know, Frodo finds himself waking each morning with mud beneath his nails and screaming geometries burned behind his eyelids. The wizard Greyvast, who is neither entirely a wizard nor entirely of this world, warns Frodo that the Ring is not a vessel of power — it is a key, a tuning instrument, resonating at frequencies that coax awake something immeasurably ancient buried beneath the very roots of the mountains. The Dark Lord Auron did not forge the Ring to enslave; he discovered it writhing in a vein of black rock and merely gave it shape, and the act destroyed his sanity utterly. Frodo assembles companions: the devoted Samwell, who alone seems immune to the growing wrongness; the ranger Striden, who carries Númenórean bloodline like a disease he cannot cure; the elf Legolath, whose immortal senses perceive things the mortal mind mercifully filters away; and others who fracture, one by one, as the journey deepens. Their path to the Mountain of Doom is not heroic but archaeological — a descent through layers of geological madness, each stratum revealing older and more incomprehensible civilizations crushed beneath Middle-earth's crust. The creature Sméagol has not been corrupted by the Ring; he has been enlightened, and what he whispers in the dark about the Sleepers is verifiably, terrifyingly true. When Frodo finally stands at the Crack of Doom, he understands that destroying the Ring will not vanquish evil — it will merely silence the alarm. The Sleepers beneath will simply return to dreaming. The question is whether that outcome constitutes salvation or something far more ambiguous and cold.
