Chapter 1: The Ember Company's Last Quiet Night

The water was up to my chest and smelled like copper and old rain.

I pressed myself against the crumbling face of what used to be a Duane Reade on Fulton Street, holding the salvage bag above my head with both arms, and watched the Titan patrol drone sweep its blue-white beam across the intersection forty yards ahead. The light moved slow and deliberate, the way a predator moves when it already knows it has time. Three seconds going right. Pause. Three seconds going left. Pause. Then the low mechanical hum faded south, and the flooded street went back to its particular shade of dark.

"Clear," I said, barely a breath.

"Gauze, whatever antiseptic is left, the waterproof matches," I said. "And if anybody finds another tin of those crackers, I will personally carry you home."

"The crackers taste like chalk," Petra said.

"Petra. I will carry you. On my back."

She smiled despite herself, and Wren shoved Kit gently toward the tarp.

I stood at the edge of the cache and let them work, because that was part of my job too — knowing when to step back and let people feel useful rather than watched. While they sorted through the cache, I stood facing the parking structure's open east wall and looked out at what was left of Lower Manhattan at night.

There was Petra, the sixteen-year-old daughter of Hephaestus who could tell you the structural integrity of any building in a five-block radius just by looking at it and who repaid that gift by spending every mission silently cataloguing potential collapses with the expression of someone reading her own future. There was Wren, son of Hermes, fast and restless and constitutionally incapable of not picking up information the way other people pick up loose change — he knew the patrol rotation patterns of three separate Titan drone units from pure observation, which had saved us twice. There was Jonas, a seventeen-year-old daughter of Ares who wore her divine heritage like a bruise and fought like someone trying to resolve a very specific argument with the universe. Kit was new — son of Demeter, which meant the broken natural world affected him in small and constant ways, like getting news that was always slightly bad, and he had the face of someone who had recently decided that the small constant bad news was not going to stop him.

Then there was Suki and Bram, the youngest two, both fifteen, children of minor gods whose names they'd learned only after the fall when the divine registries burned and Camp Half-Blood's records scattered with the smoke. Suki was careful and quiet and read every situation twice before moving. Bram laughed too loud and cried in private and had never once, in six months, been late for a watch shift.

And there was Mira, who was none of those things.

Mira Solace, daughter of Hecate, was currently waiting for us on the roof of the parking structure wearing a long coat that smelled like wood smoke and something herbal I'd never been able to identify, with her hair braided back and a hex-light burning in her cupped palm — a small flame that was the wrong color to be natural, a deep amber-violet that she used specifically because it didn't read on Titan sensor equipment.

"You're four minutes late," she said pleasantly.

"Drone pattern shifted," I said.

"The drone pattern shifted twenty-three minutes ago. You were still late by four minutes." She looked at the salvage bags. "Please tell me you found more antiseptic. Jonas tried to use river water on her elbow wound this afternoon and I told her it was categorically a horrible idea and she told me that river water had historically been used for wound treatment and I told her that historically also included dying of infection and now we're both annoyed about it."

"Two bottles," Petra said. "Iodine-based."

Mira closed her hand around the hex-light, extinguishing it. "I take back every mean thought I had about you on the way up here."

"You don't take those back," I said.

"Correct, I store them, but I do push them temporarily down the priority queue."

We went down through the stairwell and into the street, and the water took us back, and Mira conjured a new hex-light — a green one this time, dimmer, barely visible at six inches, enough to see the step ahead of your foot. She held it low and led the middle of the column while I took point and Wren took the rear, and we moved through the submerged streets in the particular silence of people who have learned that silence is just another kind of survival skill.

I kept my eyes forward and my hands in the current and did not listen to what the water said.

The Ember Company's base was a fortified station on the C line, two stops north of where the flooding stabilized at knee-depth, which meant we were close enough to the submerged zone to monitor patrol movements and far enough up to sleep without a foot of harbor water seeping through the bedrolls.

I say fortified loosely. What we had done to the Chambers Street station was more accurately described as: layered the existing structural failures with intentional structural failures that we understood and the enemy didn't, replaced the turnstile barrier with a welded frame Petra had reinforced with Hephaestus-grade fire-bonding that she insisted would hold against a light Titan unit for at least eight minutes, and hung three separate perimeter warning systems that would tell us different things depending on which one triggered first. Mira had added magical signatures to the entry points six weeks ago — nothing offensive, she'd said, just passive perception dampeners, like making a room someone doesn't quite want to walk into. It was, all told, a subway station that felt hostile in ways its original designers had not intended.

It was home. I'd made worse things into home.

The platform held six bedrolls and a common area centered around a portable camp burner and a folding table salvaged from a law office on Broadway, which was still covered in someone else's legal briefs that we'd cleared to one side and never quite thrown away. The legal briefs had started to feel structurally important. Suki had put a coffee mug on top of them eight weeks ago and none of us had moved it, in the specific superstitious way you stop moving things once a place has started to feel like a place.

"Could be rats," I agreed. The northern tunnel was our secondary exit, and if it had triggered twice it was almost certainly rats. If it triggered a third time it was something I'd have to go check in person, and I made a note in the back of my mind where I kept the list of things that might need to become emergencies.

I moved through the common area, doing the quiet arithmetic I did every time we returned from a run: seven accounted for, plus Mira, plus me, minus Cael who was still out on his scouting loop and was specifically permitted to be because Cael's scouting loops had saved us four times in seven months and I trusted his legs more than I trusted almost anything else in the dying world. The math came out fine. I let myself exhale.

"Medical bag goes to Mira," I said, setting the salvage down on the folding table. "Food rations get split six ways, Kit gets an extra share because he's been supplementing with mushrooms from the mezzanine level and I'm deeply concerned about what kind of mushrooms they are."

"They're safe mushrooms," Kit said, with the offended dignity of someone who absolutely knew what kind of mushrooms they were.

"They are technically safe," Mira said, already unpacking the antiseptic. "They also had a mild divine resonance, which means they grew somewhere this summer when the wards were thin, and I have been meaning to mention that consuming divinity-adjacent fungi is not—"

"Mira."

"—the end of the world, probably."

"Jonas," I said, because Jonas was already trying to unroll her sleeve to re-examine her elbow with the focused determination of someone who didn't want to be fussed over. "Let Mira do the elbow."

"It's fine."

"It will be more fine after Mira does it."

Jonas looked at me for a long moment with the specific expression she reserved for tactical instructions she found intellectually beneath her but was going to follow anyway. Then she rolled the sleeve back up and held her arm out, and Mira descended on it with antiseptic and the particular running commentary of a person doing medical care entirely against the tide of everyone else's preferences, and the station settled into its nighttime sounds — the camp burner's low hiss, the distant underground drip of water somewhere in the tunnels, Bram's quiet breathing from the far bedroll.

This was the part of the night I liked best. I would not have admitted that to anyone.

I sat at the folding table and ate my portion of the rations — crackers that tasted like chalk, which was a feature rather than a bug because it made you eat slower — and watched my company and did the other arithmetic, the one I did privately and never wrote down: who was holding and who was fraying and who was holding so hard they'd started to look like fraying and just hadn't acknowledged it yet. Suki was tired but stable. Kit was still finding his footing but moving in the right direction. Jonas's controlled aggression was functional rather than corrosive tonight, which meant she'd burned enough energy on the run. Bram was asleep.

Mira was, implausibly, singing something under her breath while she bandaged Jonas's elbow. Something old and circular-sounding, in a language I didn't know. Jonas had stopped arguing.

I ate my chalk crackers and did not think about the water pressing against the walls of the tunnel forty yards to our south, its particular cold weight, the way it moved even in confined spaces like something that hadn't forgotten it was supposed to be vast.

Cael came back at half past midnight.

I heard the outer perimeter signal first — the low three-note hum that meant friendly, no immediate pursuit — and was on my feet before the sound finished. Wren came awake fast the way only children of Hermes could, and Jonas sat up with her hand already on the blade she slept with, the way Jonas slept with everything.

The inner door opened.

Cael stepped through.

He was carrying a woman across his back in the particular organized way that Cael did everything — even terrible things, even things no amount of organization could actually help, he handled with a steadiness that was either admirable or devastating depending on your angle. His hands were locked under her knees and her arms were draped over his shoulders and his face was doing nothing, which meant he was doing a great deal.

The woman was old. Not elderly — simply old in the particular way of someone who had been burning themselves up from the inside for a long time. Her white hair hung loose and wet. Her feet were bare. She had the wiry, worn frame of someone who'd been walking without rest for longer than the body was supposed to sustain, and her breathing, when I got close enough to hear it, was the specific kind of breathing where each exhale sounds like it's offering to be the last one.

But it was her eyes that stopped me.

They were white. Not pale. Not cloudy with age or illness. White, the specific opaque white of eyes that had started looking at something that wasn't here anymore — that were, in the particular clinical vocabulary Mira had once explained to me with a grimness she usually reserved for genuine catastrophe, filming over.

The eyes of someone who had been an Oracle and was almost done being anything at all.

"Where," I said, and my voice came out flat and careful the way it did when I was filing something away fast.

"East side," Cael said. "Thirty-third and Park. She was in the middle of the flooded intersection, standing up. Just — standing there. I almost missed her."

"Was she followed?"

"No." Cael's jaw tightened fractionally. "I made sure."

I looked at the woman's face. At the white eyes open to the ceiling. At the small movements of her lips, which were moving without sound in the way of someone reciting something very long and very important in their head, over and over, so they don't lose it before they can say it.

Mira had gone very still in the corner. Her hex-light had guttered down to almost nothing on its own, which happened sometimes near divine manifestation. She was looking at the woman the way she looked at omens in garbage fires — with the fixed concentration of someone who was reading something in a language they preferred not to understand.

"She's Oracular," Mira said. "I can feel it from here."

"She's dying," Cael said.

"Yes," Mira said. "Those two things go together, at the end."

Cael set her down gently on the nearest bedroll — Bram's, because Bram had startled awake and was already standing, and he stepped back without being asked to make room, because Bram was the kind of person who stepped back without being asked. The woman's hands lay open at her sides. Her lips kept moving.

"Can you slow it?" I asked Mira.

Mira considered this. The hex-light guttered again. "Slow the dying, or slow the prophecy?"

"Mira."

"Those are different answers, Ash."

The woman's eyes moved.

They moved the way eyes move when they are looking at something that isn't in the room — tracking something through a geography that only she could see, slow and deliberate and with the terrible patience of someone who has already seen how this ends. Then they stopped moving.

They stopped moving and looked at me.

White and absolute and looking at me with the kind of recognition that had nothing to do with having met me before and everything to do with something much older and more frightening than a name.

The room was very quiet. The camp burner hissed. The water pressed against the tunnel walls to the south.

The woman's lips stopped moving in silence.

And then, in a voice like something burning from the inside out, she began.
