Synopsis

In a crumbling Victorian flat on the outskirts of modern London, three creatures who should not exist share a postcode, a leaking boiler, and a mutual agreement never to ask about the past. He works night shifts at a hospital morgue and counts his days like a man on death row. Vera is a vampire, ancient enough to remember when the Thames froze solid, who has spent the last century erasing herself from every record, every photograph, every memory she ever made in someone else's mind. She is terrified not of being hunted, but of being found worthy of love again. And then there is Edmund, a ghost who does not know he is dead — or rather, who knows precisely how he died and cannot stop reliving it, trapped in a loop of grief so complete that the walls of the flat have begun to rot around his sorrow. When a researcher from a private institute begins leaving notes under their door — notes that reference names none of them have used in decades — the fragile silence they have built together begins to fracture. The investigator, a woman named Sable Marsh, carries with her a journal written in a hand that Vera recognises as her own, from a year she has no memory of. As the three reluctantly resurface their buried histories, they discover they are not strangers brought together by coincidence. They are the survivors of a single catastrophic event, one that erased their shared past and scattered them into isolation. To stop Sable from completing what she has been hired to uncover, they must first face what they did to each other — and what was done to them — in the forgotten dark.
