Synopsis

Professor Edmund Voss has spent thirty years in academic exile, haunted by fragments of knowledge that no peer review committee would sanction and no university would publish. He lives alone in a crumbling New England manor inherited from a great-uncle whose final journal entries dissolve into babbling terror, cataloguing entities that predate the Olympian gods by geological epochs — beings the ancient Greeks called the Outer Darkness, shapeless and patient and hungry. When a catastrophic magical disturbance tears open reality near Camp Half-Blood, Edmund is flung bodily into a world where teenage demigods train for war against mythological monsters, where a satyr can casually explain centaur anatomy, and where the Greek pantheon is not metaphor but bureaucratic fact. Percy Jackson and his companions encounter Edmund half-drowned in the Long Island Sound, muttering coordinates in a dead dialect of Linear B. The gods dismiss Edmund as a mortal curiosity — harmless, eccentric, irrelevant. But Edmund recognizes what nobody else at camp dares name: the recent surge in monster activity is not political maneuvering between Olympus and the Titans. Something older has noticed that the divine infrastructure is cracking. The entities from his great-uncle's journal are moving. They do not want dominion over humanity. They want the erasure of all ordered consciousness — gods included. Edmund must navigate a world of adolescent heroism, divine arrogance, and cheerful mythological violence while carrying the unbearable weight of knowing that Zeus's lightning bolt is a child's toy compared to what stirs beneath the roots of creation. His choice is surgical and terrible: share what he knows and shatter the sanity of everyone who hears it, or remain silent and watch Olympus blunder into annihilation. The horror is not that the monsters are real. The horror is that the monsters are afraid too.
